Arequipa is currently facing a dire humanitarian crisis as torrential rains have triggered massive mudslides and flooding. This rainy season (Jan,Feb,March) is historic damage and despair. AQP has suffered torrential downpours that are expected to continue. Authorities are warning the death toll could rise as access roads to the town are blocked, hindering rescue efforts. The Peruvian army has deployed troops transporting humanitarian aid, drinking water and sandbags. AQP has Man-made channels or trenches used to manage overflow water, mud and debris flows (known as “huaicos”) are called “quebradas” have been breached & collapsed causing massive damage and shutting down basic travel to work and markets. Our orphanage family is safe but many of our special needs community, single Mom’s and those living in squatter areas on mountain sides are now without water/food/roads/power and not able to work. Roads have been washed out completely. Over 5,000 homes have been damaged or destroyed, forcing mass evacuations as rivers of mud bury entire neighborhoods. #livesimplyfeedingspecialneeds
